How to use a hair mask correctly
Have you ever noticed that the same hair care product in the hands of your handyman and at home can work quite differently? But let's not build conspiracy theories. When formulas are the same, the effect is determined purely by the way they are applied. The hairdresser is simply trained on certain brands of products, testing first-hand how strands with certain problems behave in different conditions. And, of course, he knows how to use a hair mask correctly.
Let's go over the principle points.
Where and how to apply
A hair mask is a treatment with a very concentrated formula, so it needs to be applied correctly, 5-15 cm away from the scalp or from the middle of the length, as we normally do with a conditioner. Otherwise the freshness at the roots will be lost right after washing. This is especially true for oily and normal-skinned women.
Severe dryness and sensitivity of the epidermis of the scalp can be a reason to correct the area where the product is applied, if its formula allows for such liberties.
And ideally, replace your regular shampoo with a soothing shampoo that's sure to work. For example, Castor Oil Shampoo is formulated to both moisturise and return comfort to the scalp.
But let's get back to the masks. As for the amount of care, it is always very individual, depending on the length of your hair, its porosity, degree of damage and even its thickness. Only by trial and error can you find out exactly how much product your hair needs.
Suppose you have decided on the quantity. Next, apply the mask all the way down to the ends, with more on the ends. And here's what else a professional can do at this stage:
- comb through the hair with a comb to distribute the formula as evenly as possible;
- curl the strands in different directions, allowing repair and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the cuticle layers;
- bundle the hair and cover the client's head with cling film, a towel or a dryer;
Tip:Sometimes relationships with masks don't work out, and that's okay too. Not everyone needs them. Short haircuts, for example, rarely need a concentrated treatment.
For fine and 'oily' hair, which tends to become heavier after almost any treatment, lighter textures are more suitable.
How long to keep
The instructions on the package of the hair mask are our assistant No. 1, as the manufacturer gives detailed instructions on how to use the product.Castor Oil Hair Mask
How to use:
After using shampoo apply the mask from the mid to the end of the hair. For best results, leave the hair mask on your hair for 5 to 10 minutes before rinse.
Very damaged or porous hair has an excuse for a longer soak. Indeed, there are times when the quality of the strands is so bad that no mask will change their appearance, let alone their condition, in a few minutes. It may make sense to hold the treatment for 15 minutes to give your hair a silky, shiny and smooth finish. Or apply the mask, roll up a towel turban and heat it with a hairdryer for 5 minutes.
How often to use
There is no general rule, stylists advise their clients to be guided by the behaviour of their hair after each use of a mask. Many professional products have a cumulative effect, so after two or three weeks it will become clear whether it's enough to return to your favourite treatment once a week or if it's time to switch to "mask after every wash" mode. Both are acceptable as long as your hair is happy.
